Title: Spirited Away
Description: Yes, We finally watched it!!

Mrs Redeyes - March 9, 2009 12:03 AM (GMT)
We finally found the time to watch the DVDs that JJ loaned us about 6 months ago :shame: it's been one of those things where we've been too busy, too tired, too brane-dead or too in need of "candyfloss for the branes" and we've just not got a round tuit until this weekend when we decided to sit down and watch it.

I have to say first of all, that being new to the genre, we both struggled a bit with the stop/start nature of the animation in the movie, it didn't seem to flow too well at first although it didn't take too long to get used to.

I was a bit surprised that none of the (initial) characters appeared to be Japanese, but once the plot thickened I realised that it didn't really matter. We both enjoyed the story and the telling of it, there were some parts that gave us "WTF" moments, but we suspect that was mostly due to our lack of experience in all things anime. Not sure about Mr R, but if we have the chance to watch another like this, I suspect it won't take us 6 months to get a round tuit next time.

Thanks JJ, we'll bring it back at Eostre! :D

Yay! So it was you I lent it to! I knew I'd lent something to someone, but I've got so many disks I couldn't even remember what it was!

I still have the master, and it's been on TV twice recently so I've not missed it :P

I think Spirited Away is one of the best Studio Ghibli films. It's fairly recent (2001) so the animation is pretty good, and although it's very strange I don't think it's too inaccessible. I actually saw it on the big screen with someone when it finally made it over here, probably KW although I'm not sure.

People have described Ghibli as the "Japanese Disney". Everything they do is very high quality and worth watching, but they are all very different. There's plenty more where that came from - I'd suggest "Howl's Moving Castle" next, because it's a lot of magical fun :D

I just realised, there's one I haven't seen yet despite having had it for years!

"My Neighbours the Yamadas" - I'd suggest watching it when you come round, but it's a bit antisocial to sit there reading subs for 90 minutes. We'll see how it goes.

There's a few other's I've not got yet either, so I should really give Ghibli some money and add them to my collect. They're one of the few studios who actually release stuff in this country. I also need to buy all the "Ghost in the Shell" stuff, which is SciFi and very different. I'm guilty of "borrowing" them years ago from some anonymous friends on t'internet and really should do the honest thing :shame:

A typical Japanese girl as depicted in animu; note the blonde hair and blue eyes.

Just the other day in fact.

'Twas good - we enjoyed it so much, in fact, that when we realised we only had the first disc (out of two! ) I just had to go and dl the whole thing so we could watch the rest.

Full write-up tomorrow, bedtime for now. B)

Sorry about that!

*Snigger*

It was quite funny, it was just at the bit where Sophie was on the hover bike after they escaped from the palace and was just about to attempt to land in the castle when the disc ended. We just sat and stared at the screen and each other for ages :D

Mr Red is going to write-up a bit more detail I think, so I'll leave that to him :whip:

So, What Now?

I'm quite happy to stick with Ghibli for a bit, and checking around I reckon I quite like the sound of "Tales from Earthsea" or even "Grave of the Fireflies" - although that is a departure from Hayao Miyazaki who we've enjoyed so far.

Opinion?

I wouldn't worry about it.

We LOL'd.

And I managed to get the whole thing dl'd overnight, one of my fastest ever torrents. Which was nice. :)
