Title: X404
Description: It's... gone!

JJW009 - January 7, 2010 11:49 AM (GMT)
Anyone else having a 404 error on x404?

It was running very slow this morning, but now it's gone completely. I'm supposed to be working from home. How can I work without ... oh, wait yeah :shame:

Mrs Redeyes - January 7, 2010 12:22 PM (GMT)
Nope, I've just been browsing through the news section and everything looks fine!!

JJW009 - January 7, 2010 01:31 PM (GMT)
Hmm. It's OK again now.

Annoyingly I'm now too busy to waste time on forums. :whip:

JJW009 - January 7, 2010 02:47 PM (GMT)
Actually, no it's not. I can't post anything, and John's started a thread.

Mrs Redeyes - January 7, 2010 03:05 PM (GMT)
Hmm, I replied and haven't had any issues at all, very odd :(

belchingmatt - February 18, 2010 12:00 AM (GMT)
Now x404 is very well established I find that sci-fi geek is very quiet. Even this plaice is much quieter. <_<

JJW009 - February 18, 2010 12:15 AM (GMT)
SFG has been more than quiet

I think his breakup with Geekette had a major impact :(

And yes, this plaice is quieter :fish:

It's because most of the regulars are over there anyway, and it's a larger community. Ironically, only the private plaice really gets used much here mow - and no one else can sea that!

I tend to think "shall I post my poll/question/comments on my forum where it'll get maybe 5 people responding, or go over to x404?"

Mrs Redeyes - February 18, 2010 08:35 AM (GMT)
Yeah, the thing is, I consider this place much more like a "chat with mates down the pub" a place where I can chat to friends about anything without feeling the need to censor myself and knowing that I like and trust the audience.

I'm much more reticent with personal things in X404 because it's much more going to a wedding, you know some of the people quite well, but most people you only know by sight and you wouldn't choose that event to reveal much detail about your life.

It is a bit quiet around here, but it's been quiet at X404 as well, some of the regulars seem to be busy or distracted by RL which I think is something all forums go through sometimes. Every once in a while I go post-crazy and spam my way through both forums thinking that at least I'll give you something to read/look at next time you visit :D

Ahhh, *blushes* ;)

I agree about the information thing. I certainly wouldn't publish on X404 about up and coming holidays and things like that, although I'll give a report once I'm back.

Also, certain wedding related things would only get posted here just in case the Wench decided to go hunting ;)

Me too. I can post anything in here. :D

He's understandably been completely gutted and miserable, and he doesn't like to talk about it. It happened late last year.

I'm not sure. Facebook, x404 or mumps. Or all the above.

Ahh shit.

11 years together and 5 of those married with the ex for me is pretty similar. I had no idea. :(

Not sure if I should say anything now (PM of course) as so much time has passed.

I really wouldn't :(

Mrs Redeyes - May 4, 2010 08:20 AM (GMT)
I'm going to take a break from X404 for a while. I will likely still read and may occasionally post, but tbh so much content there at the moment is either not of interest, contentious or downright irritating.

It may be a SOH failure on my part, but I'm not the only one, quite a few of the old regulars are ghosts around the place and when I find myself marking "read" more conversations than I actually read or take part in it's time to take a break.

I want to put more time into LJ which this will give me time for, the only downside is that I can't get LJ during work time like I can X404 and this plaice :mmm: Ah well, time will tell.

belchingmatt - July 8, 2010 08:51 PM (GMT)
Is it down?

JJW009 - July 8, 2010 10:04 PM (GMT)
Yeah, has been for a couple of hours or so.

My last post was a rant about Americans measuring butter with cups.

What's wrong with that? I still work in cups when I'm baking, even now I'm back in the Motherland

belchingmatt - July 9, 2010 08:01 AM (GMT)
Cups are 'quick and dirty' and certainly not good for patisserie where exact amounts are the difference between fail and yum.

I think they do have their uses but with portion size I'm surprised the americans don't use buckets.

JJW009 - July 9, 2010 12:24 PM (GMT)
Cups are only good for measuring volumes of fluids.

1 cup of flour or sugar can vary by up to 50% in weight depending on how fine and how aerated it is.

Actually putting butter into a cup would only be possible if it was really soft. For making a lot of pastries, the butter absolutely must be chilled and hard like a brick. You'd have to sculpt it into a cup shape with a knife, and then it would probably get stuck

As Matt said, with patisserie you need accuracy. Cups are fail.

JJW009 - July 20, 2010 12:36 AM (GMT)
It's down again, so I've done some digging.

It's registered to Saspro as we know. It's not due to expire until 2012.

It's hosted on www.fasthosts.co.uk and they seem to be up.

However, the name servers are on mediawebhost.co.uk and they seem to be down. A "Whois" on that shows it to belong to Saspro.

It's served by a company called "Fortress ITX" in NJ who provide co-location and managed hosting. Their main site is up, so it would appear to be a server in there which needs kicking.

Actually, I can ping it again now and x404 is back up.

JJW009 - January 2, 2011 07:46 PM (GMT)
Those name servers seem rather flaky...

Next time it's online, I'm going to stick the IP address on my router and DNS it myself <_<

:edit: for reference; currently resolving to: 208.116.51.234

Well that's not helping! Looks like it's the web server that's down this time...

I swear my FreeHosted little website is more reliable and faster <_<

JJW009 - August 17, 2011 10:27 PM (GMT)
OK so this is looking like it may have been a problem at my end. I also couldn't get onto Matt's forum, but I could get onto both from my connection at work.

I ruled out DNS and it definitely looks like a routing problem on my Talk-talk-Opal-Tiscali connection formally known as Freedom2Surf-Nildram-Whatever.

Did anyone else have problems, or was it just me?

KindaWobbly - August 17, 2011 10:43 PM (GMT)
I had some problems with some sites earlier on, now that you mention it.

JJW009 - August 17, 2011 10:49 PM (GMT)
Thanks, two isn't a huge sample but it's more than one . I can rest now :D

Yep, down here as well.

Mrs Redeyes - September 16, 2011 02:50 PM (GMT)
I've had no problems all day?!

JJW009 - September 16, 2011 03:47 PM (GMT)
It was down for an hour at lunch time.

Mrs Redeyes - September 16, 2011 04:54 PM (GMT)
Hmm, I must not have refreshed during that time, I didn't notice anything.
