Title: Domain Renewal

JJW009 - May 3, 2010 08:16 PM (GMT)
My old ISP has noticed that they're hosting yourwired.co.uk and that I've never actually paid them for it. They'd quite like me to give them some moneys

So given that I don't actually use the .co.uk address for anything except a mirror, is it worth £17.62 a year to keep it alive?

I could transfer it away, but that costs £25 plus whatever the new host charge. However, £2 a year in the long run is clearly much cheaper. I'd save hundreds of pounds over my expected lifetime.

The remaining alternative is to forget about it and see what happens. If the domain lapses, I may be able to get it back more cheaply. Or maybe I'll lose it forever to someone else.

So, is anyone at all attached to the .co.uk address for any reason?

belchingmatt - May 3, 2010 09:24 PM (GMT)
I use the .net so if it lapsed I wouldn't notice.

RedeyesUK - May 3, 2010 10:00 PM (GMT)
Likewise. ^^^

I guess the only issue would be if someone else bagged the domain and you decided you wanted to use it later on.

TBH, I thought .co.uk was already dead though? I'm sure I used to access this place through it and then it stopped working...

jonlumb - May 4, 2010 07:29 AM (GMT)
Well this is news, I didn't even know there was a .co.uk version! I use the .net version.

Mrs Redeyes - May 4, 2010 08:13 AM (GMT)
I have no idea, I'm not the IT genius in our house so I use what I'm told to use ;)

That rings a bell.

JJW009 - June 29, 2010 11:55 PM (GMT)
Well it's dead now.

I really need to change the header on the forum, because it's still linking to the logo on the old site <_<

I should have twigged that, was wondering why it had disappeared all of a sudden.

JJW009 - June 30, 2010 11:02 PM (GMT)
Now fixed using the .net domain. Should improve page load times very slightly too.

I'm not sure where my favicon has gone though. It's in the root path, but it's not working for me <_<

JJW009 - June 30, 2010 11:05 PM (GMT)
lol, scrub that. There was a link for it in the Java header. I found it when I looked very slightly harder, although I have no idea why it's there

JJW009 - January 3, 2011 03:33 AM (GMT)
OK so this place .net expires next month. Does anyone want it?

I've not done anything with it in years. I'm not feeling particularly productive, and on the grand scale of things there's really nothing of value here. The blogs could easily be transferred elsewhere, such as LJ which is all together better designed for the job.

Mrs Redeyes - January 3, 2011 08:49 AM (GMT)
Does that mean that this whole place would disappear and we wouldn't have access to anything on here?

How much would it cost to renew for another year?

I don't know about the ease of moving the blogs to LJ, I'm not against it exactly but as an html program would all the code (for pictures etc) need changing or is there a magic program for that? Could it be imported into my existing blog which would be ideal?

I'm not expecting answers to all the above from you, just making notes of the things I'd like to find out before making a choice.

belchingmatt - January 3, 2011 10:03 AM (GMT)
:o

I have a lot of history here. If it weren't renewed could it be archived easily? Obviously all the pictures would probably be too much, but the posts are interesting in their own way, and would include links to pictures.

jonlumb - January 3, 2011 12:11 PM (GMT)
I'd be very keen to keep this place carrying on as well, more than happy to chip in if it's going to cost. I just like the fact that it's somewhere to post with a largely intelligent audience that aren't going to develop into a flamewar just because they can.

It feels more homely than anywhere else on the internet, that's for sure.

JJW009 - January 3, 2011 01:02 PM (GMT)
OK just to be clear, it's not about the cost. Hosting costs are covered by the adverts. It's about on-line security and privacy. Following a recent conversation, I've been giving it more thought.

I've already deleted my Facebook and various other accounts I had. I'm pondering purging myself from a few other places which should be quite easy, but this place has my name all over it. If you do a domain lookup, you find my full name, address and telephone number.

I'm having very mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, I do rather like it here. On the other, do I really want potential future employers reading what I've said in my blog..?

Mrs Redeyes - January 3, 2011 01:55 PM (GMT)
But people have to sign up and have an account which you authorise to get access to the blogs don't they? Sure they'd be able to see the un-protected stuff, but can't you protect the rest of the stuff so only members can see any of the sections?

If you're worried about it from a data protection point of view then Red has said that we'll take it over, you can transfer the domain to him and then your anonymity will be as secure as you want.

I can sort of see your point, I'm quite anonymous on t'internetz anyway, but there are other options than just deleting the whole place, especially when we've all put so much time and history into it.

That was the theory...

Unfortunately, Google manages to access and cache that part because of the way searches work here. I've tried specifically blocking it, but that doesn't seem to work.

For example:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=JJW009+&q...d+risotto"

To be honest, I think I'm just blowing smoke rings. I'll probably keep everything just the way it is...

Mrs Redeyes - January 3, 2011 02:39 PM (GMT)
Ok so the google cache shows the search-specific line or so of a post? But you still can't click on it and read anymore of it than is shown in the search page unless you have an account, and whoever was searching would have to get it exactly right to see anything at all. I did a search looking for the word "lick" with your handle on Google and no reference to the post I was thinking of even showed on the page until I typed the exact phrase!!

That's actually better security than LJ has, since you can read lots of posts just by clicking on them in the search pane unless the person has their settings all on "friends only" (which I do)

I don't know how worried you are about it, but I think the Members Only section is pretty secure from an information gathering point of view. The option of transferring the domain to dissociate yourself from your handle is still there if you want it though.

I thought the blogs and the NSFKW section were locked out unless you were a member?

Edit: should read everything before posting!

When you do the google search, click on where it says "cached" and you see the entire page even when not logged in. It will say "Welcome Guest" at the top of the page.

I do think it's "reasonably obscure", but it certainly isn't secure. Security by obscurity is not something I endorse.

I just thought of which post you might mean btw. Funny because I came across that picture again just the other day

jonlumb - January 3, 2011 04:11 PM (GMT)
Would I be right in thinking you don't get access to the .htaccess file for the site?

If you can, you can lock it all down in that so that no search bots trawl the site.

Mrs Redeyes - January 11, 2011 09:21 AM (GMT)
So have you decided yet? I've kept blogging in the hope that you'll either keep it on or transfer the domain to Red so you won't be identifiable.......

:D

JJW009 - January 11, 2011 10:59 AM (GMT)
Sorry yes. Rather daftly I did update on the other place but forgot to say here

I renewed a few days ago.

My god I was in a grumpy, negative and antisocial mood. Sorry. :shame:

I was rather wrapped up in my own problems. Normal silliness will be resumed as soon as possible

JJW009 - January 4, 2012 03:12 AM (GMT)
Right, since I've opened an account with a 2 year contract for a domain I won't be using, I decided to moves this all over there too. My existing supplier expires in a few weeks, and the new one is cheaper. It's also UK based rather than American.

It's all set up and should be seamless

However, don't be surprised if it all goes horribly wrong for the next few days! Also, email me at my gmail account because this domain's email is likely to be made of fail now.

See you on the other side!

Your approval of this domain transfer has been successfully entered into the system. The domain transfer will begin.

A domain transfer typically takes 7-10 days once all parties agree.

Well it's happened. Did anyone even notice the downtime

I think I have missed a few emails though because I'd set it up wrong. Working again now :shame:

Nope! :)

That does remind me though; I've moved chezred.com but haven't bothered setting up the email accounts yet. I really should do that! :shame:
