Title: Posting Symbols On X404

JJW009 - June 4, 2010 12:55 AM (GMT)
Can anyone come up with a sane way of posting non alphanumeric characters on 404?

I just tried to post this:

In 2007 it was made illegal to hold an unauthorised protest within a square mile of Parliament.

WTF does that mean? A square mile is a unit of area, not distance!

I guess they mean they have drawn an exclusion area of one square mile around parliament. It might be true, but unhelpfully unspecific, to say "it was made illegal to hold an unauthorised protest within the square mile drawn around Parliament."

If that area is circular, then it's illegal to protest within л^-½ (about 0.56) miles of parliament.

If that area is a square, then it extends between 0.5 miles and 0.5^½ (about 0.707) miles, depending on the direction.

If that area is a rectangle 0.0001 miles wide, then the area extends for over 9000 miles.

Has anyone seen a map of this exclusion zone?

And I got this:

General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

Incorrect string value: '\xD0\xBB^-\xC2\xBD...' for column 'post_text' at row 1 [1366]

It's because I typed л^-½ which works perfectly on every forum except x404, including the old meeting place which is also phpBB.

It drives me nuts

Works fine on the forum I have set up.

I think Saspro has installed a slightly shonky version of phpbb - possibly a cpanel install from his hosting package?

The clues:

1. As above.
2. This line at the bottom:

That doesn't appear on my setup (downloaded directly from phpbb.com) or any other forum I've seen.
3. If you hit refresh in one of the boards, you get that 'resend' confirmation dialog, which again I've never seen on any other forum (When it was first set up, saspro reckoned it was a phpbb3 feature, but it ain't - not a standard one anyway).

I think the only way around it is a forum reinstall, which will probably never happen.

It's either that, or there's something crazy going on with his hosting company (eg it's working off the wrong character set).

Xaphos

I read that as Zathras, which would explain the problem with communication

Since I can generate an SQL error so easily, that suggests the input is not being escaped or parsed in a strict fashion. Any suggestions as to which SQL injection attack I should try first? I'm thinking to dump the admin password and re-skin the default site in Hello Kitty stylee
