Ooh, very nice.
What are you going to put in it? Or are you just going to live in it?
JJW009 - January 23, 2007 11:26 PM (GMT)
I was thinking Lady K could live there if she can't find a new place
Seriously... going to rig it up with power and wired Internet, stick a PC in there and insulate the walls. The chair-bed will fit easily, and she'll be snug as a bug in shed! All she needs is a 10Kg box of chocolates and she'll be fine! It's actually bigger than the room she's squatting in now

JJW009 - April 11, 2007 10:15 PM (GMT)
Well no need for Lady K to live there, which is just as well because I haven't gotten very far! Cat thinks it's tempting though.
Here's the latest picture:

It's taking forever, partly because I'm a lazy git but also I keep hitting problems. I spent about 3 hours dealing with the roots of that there elderberry tree!
Big_Adam - April 11, 2007 10:22 PM (GMT)
Ruddy hell JJ. Just get it done.
Either that or do something very "Men Behaving Badly" and make it into a sauna.
belchingmatt - April 11, 2007 10:41 PM (GMT)
The most important thing about the construction industry is the prolific use of hardcore before any erection commences.
JJW009 - April 11, 2007 10:44 PM (GMT)
I was actually looking for hardcore, but the nearest thing I could find in Homebase was shingles
This errection has been 3 months in the making already. Once it's up, it's damn well staying up for the rest of my life!

That's good to hear. You mustn't rush these things.

What you need is a blog...

There has been no progress.

That's where it's been since February
I should probably make use of my time this week getting it up. It's a big job though, so I could use a hand. I still need to buy some hardcore first; and I'm not sure how much I can fit in the car. It's pretty mucky stuff too, so I wouldn't want anyone from work to see it - there are restrictions on what you're allowed to do in a company vehicle.

Now try reading that again in a thread that wasn't titled Shed.

You have no idea how hard that was to pull off :P

but tis a lovely shed
JJW009 - April 19, 2009 08:46 PM (GMT)
Shed.

I did as much as I could myself, then KW was here from about 14:30 to 20:00 helping me with the big stuff.
I'm never building anything ever again that's made from timber. Nothing lined up. The doors have an 8mm gap around, and the latches don't latch by a mile. The glass doesn't fit in the frames, and the windowsill is made of bendy rubber which won't support anything. There was much swearing.
There's still a lot of bits to do. It's not screwed down yet. The roof needs the ends doing and the felt properly tacking down. The doors need re-hanging. The glass isn't fitted at all, and I'm not actually sure how to do that. However, the hard work is over and I should have it all done by the end of the week :D
RedeyesUK - April 19, 2009 08:52 PM (GMT)
Yay! :D
:aha: :aha:  :egg:
817 days that's taken you though!
Bet it feels good to have it done, though, right?
Mrs Redeyes - April 20, 2009 12:39 PM (GMT)
Hurrah!!
That looks brilliant, and it'll be even better once you've sorted out all the niggles. I can't believe it looks so huge!! What are you going to put in it?

In my garden shed I will mostly be storing gardening things :P
Lawn mower, strimmer, hedge trimmer, spades, forks, chemicals, peat, garden furniture etc. etc..
I've now finished all the nailing. I started about 10am, so even allowing for breaks that's still over 5 hours! I'm currently fitting some cupboards and hooks and things.
Annoyingly, I seem to have run out of creosote. I need to get some before it rains <_<
JJW009 - April 20, 2009 07:13 PM (GMT)
I am posting this from the shed, because I can

Mr Red says "That's what Sheds are for"
I say "You're very sad" :P
Have you put any of your monitors in there yet?? ...
JJW009 - April 21, 2009 11:19 PM (GMT)
No monitors are going in the shed!
Here's a photo update.
Looking in you can really see how big it is.

I has cupboards. They is mostly full of chemicals and tools

I can finally hang the mower somewhere I don't trip over it!

And the rakes will no longer smash my face in:

However, I am truly apalled by the crapness of the doors:

Look at the gaps! The door frame is over an inch wider than the doors, and also a completely different shape! I don't think anything is square.
Se the little twiddly catch thing here? It's supposed to be on the baton bellow it, but it missed by about 2 inches so I had to add a bit. 2" FFS - that's not even close!

See the light shining through the holes? That's where the rain will come in and cause everything to rot and rust:

I needed to work on the windows too. Those pale pieces of wood you can see above the cupboard had to be added because the "Window sill" was so pathetic and bendy it just couldn't hold the glass. I also added beading at the top, because the plans just left it rattling in the breeze! I have considered puttying the panes in, but it seams a little redundant making the windows draught proof when there's gaps elsewhere you could get your arm through.

I have now creosoted the new wood. Tomorrow I will do the whole thing, and perhaps paint the inside with a "Red Cedar" preservative. It's brighter than the dark brown which would help with finding stuff. I also have solar lighting to fit, although I'm not sure how often I'll be shedding after dark
I have a few ideas about the doors. The obvious thing is to build a new frame to put them in. Alternatively I could make one big door that actually fit, but that might be too heavy. With the two doors the weight is balanced so the frame won't twist further. I need to think about it, but it's a real pain!
The shed was really poor quality and bally hard work. I'm never buying another!

That's good. I wouldn't like to think of it rotting away in less time than it took you to erect it.
JJW009 - April 23, 2009 11:11 PM (GMT)
Tomorrow is the last day of sunshine, so hopefully I shall be able to finish painting it. I've done over half the inside. The outside should be easier. I think I might paint the ceiling white.
I was considering using daub to fill the gaps. I think the cat litter will make a suitable smelly gunk, but then maybe not
